The Role and Advantages of Conventional Milling
#

Conventional milling remains a preferred method for machining certain materials, especially those with rough or hard outer layers such as roughcast iron or hot rolled steel. One of the key advantages of conventional milling is that tool deflection tends to be parallel to the tool itself, allowing the tool to engage the rough surface at a more controlled and forgiving rate. This approach is particularly effective for challenging surfaces, as it reduces the risk of chipped cutting edges and excessive tool wear that can occur with more aggressive methods like climb milling.

When using climb milling, the tool engages the material more aggressively, which can result in heavier chips and greater deflection. This is less ideal for rough or hard surfaces, making conventional milling the better choice for such applications.

Millstar offers a comprehensive selection of conventional milling machines, all of which can be upgraded to CNC-controlled systems. For more information or to discuss specific requirements, feel free to contact us.
